DSPS-Prominent® System: No more facial masks for radiotherapy of patients with head and neck tumors
The DSPS-Prominent® System brings faceless mask radiotherapy to life – A major leap towards comfort, innovation, and patient-centered care.
No more facial masks for radiotherapy of patients with head and neck tumors.
At MacroMedics, we are proud to announce an important milestone in radiotherapy. In collaboration with the Verbeeten Institute, a specialized hospital for radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, a comprehensive study was conducted to explore the practical application of our DSPS-Prominent® system, specifically utilizing the occipital mask only. The study focused on its effectiveness in surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) for patients with head and neck tumors.
The study demonstrated that patient positioning with the unique DSPS-Prominent® occipital mask, combined with surface scanning, provides accuracy equivalent to treatment with a facial mask while offering a significantly more comfortable and patient-friendly experience. This innovative approach eliminates the discomfort, anxiety, and claustrophobia often caused by full facial masks.
Marion Essers, medical physicist at the Verbeeten Institute, stated:
"We are very enthusiastic about the results. This technique is just as precise as using a traditional mask, but it significantly increases patient comfort. For many patients, it is a big relief not to have to wear a face mask during treatment."
Thanks to this successful collaboration, the Verbeeten Institute is now the first in The Netherlands to offer radiotherapy treatment for head and neck tumors without the need for a facial mask. They are proud adopters of the DSPS-Prominent® system, paving the way for a new standard in patient care.
